Traditional Floss vs. Waterpik: A Dentist Makes a Comparison

June 12, 2019

waterpik illustrationYou’ve heard the admonition to floss time and time again. Flossing helps to remove plaque between the teeth and plays a pivotal role in preventing dental decay and bad breath. But what if you don’t like to floss? Is there a viable alternative? Many people use a Waterpik to clean between their teeth. A dentist in Lakewood is here to make a comparison between these two methods.

Waterpik: Pros and Cons

A Waterpik uses a concentrated stream of water to rinse plaque away from the tight spaces in the mouth. It is very easy to use, especially for individuals who have arthritis or other mobility difficulties that make it challenging for them to use regular floss. Many dental professionals recommend a Waterpik for patients who have braces because the stream of water can easy clean beneath the braces’ wires.

However, Waterpiks do have a few downsides. One is that they can be quite costly. They are also not as easy to travel with as regular floss. Their biggest disadvantage, however, is that they are slightly less effective at removing plaque than traditional floss.

Traditional Floss: Pros and Cons

When it is properly used, floss has been proven effective at removing plaque between the teeth. It allows you to have complete control over how you clean your teeth, it is very affordable, and it comes in a variety of thicknesses that are suited to different types of mouths.

Of course, traditional floss also has a few disadvantages. One is that many people find it tedious or difficult to floss, particularly when they are trying to clean their back teeth. Another is that flossing can be uncomfortable, particularly if you do not do it regularly. Improper flossing technique could even cause the gums to bleed.

Which Is Better?

If you are struggling to decide whether you should use a Waterpik or floss, schedule a preventive dentistry appointment with your dentist. They will give you product recommendations based on your unique circumstances. Your dental hygienist will also be happy to show you proper techniques for flossing that will enable you to achieve the cleanest mouth possible.

Some individuals choose to use both a floss and a Waterpik. They use the floss first to loosen plaque, and then they use the Waterpik to rinse away any remaining particles that might be lingering between the teeth. You could ask your dentist if following a similar pattern would be beneficial for you.

Cleaning between your teeth is important! Whether you choose to use a Waterpik or traditional floss, be sure to make interdental cleaning part of your daily oral hygiene routine.
