Invisalign is a popular alternative to traditional metal braces that can close gaps between teeth and give you a straighter, more uniform smile. Though it’s often praised for its ability to beautify grins without being visually invasive, Invisalign can also correct a range of oral health issues. Read on to learn about four bite issues and what Invisalign can do to correct them.

#1: Underbite

When the bottom teeth sit in front of the upper ones when a person’s mouth is closed, this is called an underbite. They are usually the result of the lower jaw growing faster than the upper one. Underbites can make it hard to speak and eat properly. They can also lead to excessive wear on the teeth. Invisalign can be paired with attachments like elastics, small rubber bands that connect the upper and lower aligners to create resistance between them to guide the jaw into position, to correct this issue. It can pull the lower jaw backward to make the bottom teeth fit behind the top ones. For older patients or those with severe bite issues, traditional orthodontics may be necessary.

#2: Crossbite

A crossbite is characterized by some of the bottom teeth sitting in front of the top ones. Invisalign can be used to fix slight crossbites, such as those involving one or two teeth. On the other hand, severe bite problems that involve multiple teeth are better treated with traditional braces. The two main types of crossbites are:

  • Posterior Crossbite – This occurs when the lower back teeth fit over the ones in your top jaw.
  • Anterior Crossbite – This is when the lower front teeth fit over the ones of your top jaw.

#3: Open Bite

If the top and bottom teeth don’t touch when someone’s mouth is closed, this is called an open bite. Open bites are one of the less common bite problems and are occur when the jawbone grows at an irregular rate. It can also be the result of childhood habits like thumb, finger, or tongue sucking, which can prevent normal biting and lead to problems with tooth eruption or eating. Fortunately, Invisalign can move the teeth so that they meet correctly.

#4: Overbite

When the upper teeth stick out too far, this is called an overbite. Slight overbites are normal, but larger ones make the top teeth more susceptible to damage and wear. Patients aged 12 and under, can use Invisalign with a mandibular advancement appliance to move the jaw into place as it grows. Those over age 12 can generally use clear aligners with elastics to steadily move the jaw into position.
